Background

Before YouTube integration, ViewBait was strong at generation and weak at context. Creators copied video titles by hand, pasted them into the studio, and hoped they remembered what the video was about.

YouTube already holds the title, the current thumbnail, performance signals, and the actual content. Pro users asked for one workflow: start from the video, end with a thumbnail on the video.

The task

For Pro users with YouTube connected:

  1. Browse uploads in the studio YouTube tab
  2. Run video analysis to understand content, hooks, and thumbnail notes
  3. Receive 2 to 4 suggested thumbnail concepts grounded in that analysis
  4. Pre-fill the generator with concept text and video-aware instructions
  5. Optionally set the finished thumbnail on YouTube when OAuth includes thumbnail scope

Constraints

  • Pro gate for OAuth and analysis: Connect, video analyze, title or description updates, and set thumbnail require Pro. API returns 403 below Pro.
  • OAuth scopes: Thumbnail upload needs explicit thumbnail permission. UI warns and offers reconnect when scope is missing.
  • Analysis cost: Full video understanding is expensive. Cache analytics client-side per video.
  • Concept quality: Suggestions must be short enough to become on-image text, not paragraph pitches.
  • Same studio state: Concepts must flow into the shared generator form, not a separate export step.

Our approach

YouTube Studio Bridge treats each video card as a launch point. Open analytics, suggest concepts, tap one to fill thumbnailText and custom instructions built from the analysis summary. Generate in the main studio. Pro users with thumbnail scope can pick a gallery image and apply it to the video without leaving ViewBait.

How we solved it

Step 1: Pro-gated OAuth connect

What we did: POST /api/youtube/connect/authorize checks Pro tier before redirecting to Google. Tokens stored server-side only.

Decision: YouTube connection is a Pro capability, not a free hook that fails later.

Why: OAuth maintenance and support cost real effort. Gate at the front door with a clear upgrade path.

Step 2: Video analysis with structured rubric

What we did: POST /api/youtube/videos/analyze sends the YouTube URL to Gemini video understanding. Returns summary, topic, tone, hooks, key moments, thumbnail appeal notes, characters, and places.

Decision: Fixed JSON schema for analytics, not chat prose.

Why: Downstream features (concept suggestions, custom instructions) need reliable fields to compose context blocks.

Step 3: Suggest 2 to 4 thumbnail concepts

What we did: POST /api/youtube/videos/suggest-thumbnail-concepts takes cached analytics and returns short concept strings with optional style hints.

Decision: Cap at four concepts, minimum two. Text suitable as main thumbnail line or title: subtext split.

Why: Matches how creators actually compose thumbnails. Enough variety without overwhelming the grid.

Step 4: Pre-fill generator from concept or re-roll

What we did: "Use this" on a concept sets thumbnail text and injects a video context summary into custom instructions. Re-roll refreshes concepts or reapplies video-aware defaults.

Decision: Share StudioProvider form state with manual and chat modes.

Why: Context should survive mode switches. Creators tweak in manual after accepting a concept.

Step 5: Optional set thumbnail on YouTube

What we did: Pro users with thumbnail scope open a picker from the video card, choose a gallery image, and apply via server-side YouTube API.

Decision: Show a banner when connected but scope is missing, with one-click reconnect.

Why: Partial OAuth grants are common. Tell users exactly what to fix instead of silent failure.

  • One-click pre-fill into generator with video context summary
  • Set thumbnail on YouTube (Pro plus thumbnail scope)
  • Import by URL tab for public channel browsing (style extract without full OAuth workflow)

Results

Before: Creators context-switched between YouTube Studio, notes, and ViewBait. Titles and hooks were copied manually.

After: Open video, analyze once, pick a concept, generate with context, optionally publish thumbnail. Session time in YouTube tab correlates with completed generations.

How we know it worked: Pro users who connect YouTube generate more thumbnails per session than non-connected users. Concept-to-generate clicks are the highest-intent path in the YouTube view.

What you can learn

  1. Start workflows from the user's source of truth. For video creators, that is often the upload list.
  2. Structure analysis output. Free-form video summaries do not compose well into downstream automation.
  3. Limit concept counts. Two to four options fit thumbnail decision speed.
  4. Scope OAuth honestly. Tell users when reconnect is needed for publish actions.
  5. One form state everywhere. Context pre-fill only sticks if manual, chat, and YouTube actions share state.
